Retail store website design and Shopify stores with in-store pickup.

Before a visit, a shopper can check on a phone whether you're open, whether you have the item, and whether they can order it and pick it up. We build the website or the Shopify store and the local search presence, so they can find you and buy from you, in the store or online.

Where shoppers slip away

Retail store website design starts with a search on a phone. Someone needs a birthday gift and searches "gift shop near me" or "throw pillows in stock nearby." They check whether a store close by has it, whether it's open, and whether they can order now and pick it up later. Then they drive over, order online, or buy somewhere else.

That path can break in three places:

  • The store is hard to find. Without a complete Google Business Profile and a site that says what you carry, a nearby search for exactly that may not show your shop.
  • There's no way to buy after closing time. Someone who wants a gift at 10:00 PM can't buy it from you, so they buy it somewhere else.
  • The store and the site don't match. The site shows a product that sold out last week, and an online order can't be picked up in the store.

We build the website or the Shopify store, the local search presence, and, where your systems allow it, the connections that keep the store and the site in step.

What we build for retail stores

  • A website for the store. What you carry, your hours, directions, and contact details, checked against WCAG 2.2 AA, with our target of an LCP (the moment the main content appears) under 2.0 seconds on mobile. See Websites.
  • A Shopify store. Theme work, product templates, and a checkout styled with your logo, colors, and fonts, with payments, shipping, and sales tax set up and tested. Local pickup and local delivery are delivery options in Shopify's shipping settings, so we set them up with the shipping in the Basic tier. See E-commerce.
  • Local SEO. A complete Google Business Profile, set up and kept up to date by SEO & Visibility in your own Google account, and pages that match what people nearby search for. Location pages are part of the Plus tier. See SEO & Visibility.
  • Customer lists and automatic emails. A welcome email, a review request after a purchase (sent to every customer the same way, with no reward attached), and newsletter lists for customers who opted in, set up in GoHighLevel or HubSpot. The written quote lists which automations are included. Connecting your store or point-of-sale system to the CRM works where it has an official way to connect (an API), priced in your written quote. See CRM & Follow-up.

How shoppers find a store and decide where to buy

When someone searches for a product "near me," Google can show stores close by and, for stores that share their stock with Google, the product with its price and whether it's in stock. Getting your stock to Google depends on your point-of-sale system, so that setup is priced in your written quote.

On the site, a shopper ready to buy needs a product page and a checkout that work on a phone, and one planning a visit needs the hours and a way to order ahead. Pickup in store serves both: the shopper chooses pickup at checkout, you mark the order ready, and Shopify sends them a Ready for pickup email.

For the stock online to match the shelves, your online store and your point-of-sale system have to share inventory. Shopify POS syncs with your Shopify store. Another system needs a connection where it has an official way to connect (an API), priced in your written quote, so we ask about yours on the first call.

You add products and change prices yourself in your Shopify admin, which comes with your Shopify plan. On a website without an online store, we change listings, hours, and specials for you within the monthly hours of a Support & Maintenance care plan; a CMS to edit them yourself is part of the Websites Custom tier.

How a project runs

It starts with a free 30-minute call. Within three business days, you get a written quote: the scope and a fixed price or a price cap. After you sign, we start with Discover, which is included in the price. The work follows four steps: Discover, Design, Build, and Grow.

  1. Discover. We go through what you sell, how customers buy from you, and which systems the site works with.
  2. Design. We design the site and the path from a search to a purchase or a visit.
  3. Build. We build the site or the store, set up payments, shipping, pickup, and sales tax, and place real test orders before launch.
  4. Grow. The first 30 days after launch are included. After that, local SEO, a CRM, and a care plan are services of their own. Every account is in your name.

Rules worth knowing in the US

We don't give legal or tax advice, so your lawyer and your accountant confirm what applies to you.

  • Accessibility. The ADA requires businesses open to the public to serve people with disabilities, and the Justice Department's web guidance (March 2022) says that includes what they offer online. In Robles v. Domino's Pizza (2019), a case brought by a blind customer, the Ninth Circuit held that the ADA applied to the pizza chain's website and app because they connect customers to its physical restaurants. That ruling binds courts in the western states; Texas and Florida are in other federal circuits. We check every page against WCAG 2.2 AA.
  • "Made in USA" claims. The FTC's Made in USA Labeling Rule, in force since August 13, 2021, says a product labeled Made in USA without qualification must be "all or virtually all" made in the US, online product pages included. Ask your supplier for the details first.
  • Sales tax. We set up sales tax in Shopify with the settings you and your accountant decide on. Since South Dakota v. Wayfair (2018), a state can require an online seller with no store there to collect its sales tax once its sales into the state are large enough. Shopify doesn't file or remit your taxes unless you use Shopify Tax with automated filing.
  • Emails and reviews. Under the CAN-SPAM Act, a marketing email needs a clear way to unsubscribe and your postal address. Google doesn't allow rewards for reviews or asking only happy customers, and the FTC's rule on consumer reviews bans rewards tied to a review's sentiment.

What we don't do

  • We don't take product photos or write product descriptions. A photographer and a copywriter, or you, take care of them.
  • We don't set up or run your ads. The ad accounts stay with you or whoever runs them.
  • We don't guarantee rankings or sales. Local SEO grows over months.
  • We don't lock you in. The Shopify account, the domain, and your customer data are in your name.

FAQ

Retail & Shops: frequently asked questions

It depends on whether you want to sell online. Starting at $3,500, you get a custom website of 5 to 10 pages that shows the store, what you carry, and your hours, with the SEO foundation and 30 days of support after launch. For a Shopify store, starting at $6,500, you get theme work, product templates, and payments, shipping, and sales tax set up and tested; local pickup and local delivery are set up with the shipping. Moving products and customers from WooCommerce, Wix, or Etsy, and a connection to your fulfillment service, are part of the E-commerce Plus tier. A connection to your point-of-sale or inventory system is part of the E-commerce Custom tier, priced in your written quote. Shopify's plan, transaction, and app fees are paid by you, directly to Shopify and the app makers. To show up more in nearby searches, you can add SEO & Visibility, starting at $1,500 a month. After a free 30-minute call, you get a written quote within three business days, with a fixed price or a price cap. You'll find every tier on the pages for E-commerce, Websites, and SEO & Visibility.
